F&M Finishes 25-Mile Ride in Oak Park
by Lori Calcinardi
Description: The Fitness and More group completed the Frank Lloyd Wright Bike Ride to add to its growing list of accomplishments. The Frank Lloyd Bike Ride, sponsored by the Oak Park Cycling Club, had 4 distances to choose from (15, 25, 50 and 62 miles). Along the route, there were various sites to see, particulary, homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Jordans in attendance: Booker Jordan Jr., Deatrice Childs and her son Josh, and Lori (Kinnard) Calcinardi
The Highlights: We had a chance to ride thru various west suburban communities that most of us probably never would have ever visited before. Some were small, quaint communities that, unless you knew someone who lived there, you would probably never venture off of I-290 to look at. We began in Oak Park, and rode thru Berwyn, Riverside, Brookfield, LaGrange and Western Springs. At the 25-mile turn-around there were plenty of treats to eat and a bike-repair station.
The Lowlights: Okay so, when you registered, you were given a map of your route as well as a list of all the landmarks to see. How they figured you could maneuvre riding a bike, reading a map AND a list of landmarks, not miss the arrow markings they provided on the street, AND not get hit was a little mind boggling. Luckily, our group got out early (around 7a) and since it was Sunday, there wasn't much traffic. But the traffic did pick up a little later in the ride. Also, since there was such a large window of time to start (6a-9a) and, since there weren't very many people, our group often times found ourselves riding alone. It was a far cry from the Late Nigth Bike Ride where there were literally thousands of people. Too many people can be dangerous -- as when the bike traffic gets backed up -- but too few can be dangerous as well as the car traffic isn't really aware of what is going on.
And then Deatrice fell and that always sucks.
Verdict: Worth doing but it would have been nicer if more of the group was in attendance since there just weren't very many people on this ride. Pat was still recouperating from her fall at the Late Night Bike Ride, Julene is in training for the 1/2 Marathon in September, Vernon was AWOL, and Ronnie just feared me and my speed bike. :-) Hopefully, we can reconvene the group for the next one.
OAN (On Another Note) speaking of Julene, we should all come out and cheer her on. Just because the Olympians make it look easy doesn't mean it is so. Congratulations in advance Julene!!!
